What it involves
A retailer selling in store and online solves one problem twice: stock. If the till and the online shop do not read the same stock and price data, they drift apart within a week, and the customer at the till pays for the difference. That is why everything here is built on one database. But one database does not mean one way of operating. A shop needs a till that can serve the queue even when the internet goes down. Management needs figures from all branches before the end of the month. And a chain of shops needs to manage price lists and promotions from one place, not at each till separately. The variants differ mainly in how much of the operation they have to cover and whether you also need the data outside the shop, in a browser.
