What it involves
In manufacturing, the first thing lost is whatever nobody measures. Downtime that is not recorded anywhere never shows up in any report, and decisions about capacity then rest on guesswork. Collecting data directly from the machines and from the orders is what replaces that guesswork with figures. Measurement can come from two sides, and each shows something different. From the outside, from a sensor on the machine that records how long it ran and when it stood still, without interfering with its control. And from the inside, from the order, which knows what was to be produced, from which material and by when. Only when the two meet can you say whether a delay is down to the machine, the plan or the material.
